"I have a passion for reading good literature (and a good bit of schlock lit. too) and writing gives me an opportunity to see my ideas come alive on the  page. (This is more of a goal as most of my writing so far has been self-expressive. I want to write more, but have never been able to express my ideas clearly, to make the words clearly convey what I mean. Never got to  trying to create a character.) I find writing helps me to express my inner feelings about life and the world around me.
Writing is a creative activity I enjoy.

Do You Have Something To Say…or Better Yet Write?

F. Barish-Stern

Most of us do!  But most of us, never do!

When I was a little girl, children were supposed to be seen and not heard, so I kept my mouth shut…and wrote what I felt!

I guess that was a good thing in the long run, because that’s how I became a writer. I wrote out of necessity, I was always a loner, and shut myself up in my room, and dreamed of being something I wasn’t, then wrote it all down.  I imagined so many things, but couldn’t write fast enough to get it all onto the paper before it faded into the next idea.

Unlike me, many people just want to write for fun.  Some people want to express themselves and their ideas, while others conjure up great story plots, just waiting to be shared. But there are also those who are driven to write; to leave a message for present and future generations.  The problem is, the majority never put pen to paper and these stories remain unwritten!

I was driven and lived to write.  My first story, “The World I See,” won awards and my second story, “Rainbow City,” was actually published in the Arts Review.  Over the years I had other stories published, but as I got older, I drifted more toward non-fiction pieces for newspapers and magazines.

That was, until my sons decided that video games were more interesting than reading.  That’s when I pulled the old imagination out of the drawer and got to work.  They loved superheroes so I created a 75 page superhero story I was sure would encourage them to read.   No such luck, so in the bottom drawer it went…and I picked up my pen and went back to the real world.

So why am I telling you this?

Years later I met a New York City editor and told her about the story I wrote for my sons, and she actually wanted to read it.

That moment changed my life.  She encouraged me to work on the story and at the same time we built a lasting friendship.   We spent hours and hours talking about writing and writers and the exclusive publishing world that was so hard to break into.

We decided with our combined backgrounds we could probably help people who wanted to write.  We did forums and discovered many people just needed that encouragement to get started, or help nurturing their ideas.  Some of their stories needed structure and editing, while others were rejected and really just needed another set of eyes to provide what needed in order to be published.  But the brightest moments were when we met people who just wanted to write….

We put together a writing and publishing company that became a place for anyone who wanted to write.  Once a month, we offered, “Networking with the Authors,” an open house where writers shared their work, writing concerns and the problems they experienced.  It was usually a “standing room only,” afternoon that invigorated their writing minds and was an incredible platform for both novice and established writers.

Most people at one time or another have told us they have the desire to “someday” write a book…but, most people never will!  I believe that writing a book shouldn’t be an impossible task to begin or an uphill battle to finish, but rather the stuff dreams are made of!

Over the years we’ve learned so much from the writers we mentored.  They felt most writing guides and courses were dry and hard to get through, so they quit.  We decided to make the process fun!  We created the POWER OF 3, The THREE WISE GUIDES, the writer, Ms. IWANNA B WRITER, the wise old owl, Ms. EDI TOR, the fox with a fountain pen, and Mr. I. M. PUBLISHER, the successful English type dog-gent, each character shares their professional prospective to give anyone who wants to write a step-by-step guide to the construction of a book from the idea to the finished and published story.

We even road tested the concept on my super hero story, now an almost 800 page published trilogy.

If you really want to write DO IT NOW!  Don’t wait for the “someday,” it usually doesn’t come.  Find the best find way to get started and stick with it to the end.  If solitary writing is a problem, find a group or mentor.  If getting started and staying on track, is your issue follow a step by step guide that you will stick with. What ever your issue find your solution…Someday when your words are being read you will be so glad you did!
